There’s a misconception that leadership and service is something that you grow into later in life or that there’s an age minimum. But the truth is, our young generation has just as much power to create lasting impact as adults do.
When a young person volunteers, they are stepping into a responsibility, a job, and role. They aren’t just completing a task and fulfilling a requirement. They’re also learning the power behind empathy, kindness, and compassion. They are learning to see beyond themselves, understand the needs of others, and recognize that small contributions can create real change. That shift in perspective is where leadership begins.
Young people bring forth unique qualities when it comes to service. It’s the sense of willingness, creativity, and fearlessness. They aren’t stuck on what has been done in the past – they create new ways forward. They ask deeper questions. They bring forth new solutions.
What often gets overlooked is how much young people grow through engaging in a volunteer space. It teaches them responsibility, leadership, confidence, problem-solving skills, and so much more that are critical to their personal growth as they move forward in all stages of their lives. Whether they are organizing a fundraiser, reading to a classroom, or working an event, these experiences change the way they see themselves and others.
Arguably the most important quality they gain is their sense of power and ownership. It allows them to realize that they don’t need permission to go make a difference. They have the power to support a cause that’s close to them, work on projects, and inspire those around them. That’s how our young people become trailblazers in service.
Often times our young generation can get overlooked or underestimated, but serving their communities gives them a platform where they are needed. When they are empowered to lead through service, they drive change.
