8 To Graduate

A small requirement. Lifelong impact.

What if just eight hours could help shape stronger, kinder communities, and more engaged citizens?

That’s the heart behind the 8 To Graduate Initiative – a proposal urging schools to require only 8 hours of community service for high school seniors before graduation.

High school is more than grades and a diploma. It’s about preparing students for the world beyond those walls. Community service is proven to help students develop compassion, build leadership and communication skills, understand the needs of their own communities, and learn the value in giving back. Sure, many students may already be volunteering, but this initiative ensures every senior has the opportunity to step outside of themselves and make a difference.

The 8 To Graduate initiative is about creating meaningful experiences that fits into the student’s lives. This requirement is intentionally attainable, realistic, and accessible.

Eight hours is:

  • Manageable for busy students
  • Does not cause financial burden
  • Can be completed through a wide variety of organizations
  • Encourages participation without overwhelming the students or school

When students serve their communities, both of them thrive. It is helping them to create tangible impact, connect and network with professionals and local organizations, and fosters a culture of service and responsibility. This initiative can serve as a stepping stone for personal and professional development that can carry into college, careers, and adulthood.

Change begins with advocacy. By signing the 8 To Graduate petition, you’re standing up for students, communities, and the belief that service should be part of education. Just eight hours can be enough to change how students see the world, and their place in it.
